How it all began

It began with a graveside visit…a dear friend I needed to say good-bye to.  There were rocks left on his headstone, a practice I had seen in Europe but rarely here.  The rock was a note left by the visitor, a marker, a symbol of remembering.  I started to think about all the friends and classmates who were gone but not forgotten.  What could we do to give them a place?  My first idea was to write names on small stones and take some of them up to the Q on the hill behind the high school.  I graduated in 1962 and got nothing but moans and groans from classmates who just knew they could not make it up and back without medical assistance.  I moved my idea down to level ground, which brought me to the high school.

Living in Seattle over the past thirty years, I have been involved in the community and the rescuing of the Pike Place Market.  Forty seven thousand engraved bricks were sold over the course of twenty years, and those funds keep the historical site from the wrecking ball.  I went to the computer and began to research BRICK possibilities.  March of 2007 found me back at QHS having enthusiastic conversations with Tim Gallagher, the principal and Jerry Thomas the VP.  Jerry became my HEAD BRICK and from that point on the project took on it’s own energy.

Months of meetings and dedicated volunteer hours, has finally brought us to our launching date.  Trojan Terrace has a design, a tax number and a self-funding goal of 5,000 bricks sold.  These will be placed in the center of the project, an area bordered by natural stone benches that are being offered at $1,000 each.  The entrance of the Terrace will be a large granite Bucks Lake boulder with a Trojan Head carved into it…. donation amount is $5,000.

It is exciting to finally be able to bring this to the community and alums.  We are looking forward to making a positive change to our school and at the same time, create an area that will serve as a place of remembrance and reflection.

Yours truly,
