Let’s GO Football and Soccer!

Summer Shape-Up

By Danyelle Kelly

Who  here  loves  soccer  and  football?!  They  are  two of  the  best  sports  played  in  the  world, and  also the  most popular.  These  sports  have  been  around  for  a  long  time.  Both  sports  are  played  in Quincy  by kids  5-15  years  old.  Soccer is an  awesome  sports  to  play,  for  the  fun  of  it!!

A  long  time  ago  soccer  used  to  be  called  football  because  they  used  their  foot  to  kick  a  ball.  Football  was  played  a  long  time  ago  all  over  the  whole  world.  It  was  also  played  by  the  Indians  but  used  different  rules  than  ours.

Soccer  is  played  almost  everywhere.  It is  the  most  played  sport  in  the  world.  Many  8th  graders  in  QHS  play. Jared  Kuipers  said this  about  soccer, “I  like  the  sport  soccer  because  it  shows  you  how  to  play,  stay  in  shape,  and  keeps  your  adrenaline  going.”   Also, Sadie  Ray  says, I  like  the  sport  football  because  it’s  a  fun  sport  to  watch  and  I  grew  up  with  it.”

So  if  children  or  teenagers  wanted  to  play  for  a  year the Recreation Department is where to go, and be ready to play hard! But also have fun playing soccer or football.  It’s for 8th graders as well as 5-15 year olds.  So soccer and football are the best sports and young people would like to play one of them. Some people could also turn pro if they love the sport. Because anything can happen!!

How do people stay in shape during the summer? The answer is to join the swim team. To some people swimming is just splashing around in the pool, but on the swim team you have to swim countless laps back and forth across the pool. Sure it’s tiring, but it’s one of the best ways to stay in shape in the summer. Your shoulders, legs, and abs are all getting a workout simultaneously. The only catch to joining the swim team is to getting up at 6:00 in the morning and jumping in the icy-cold chlorinated water.

Now, let’s talk about the workout. First is the warm-up.  The team usually does 500 yards, which is 20 laps across the pool. Next are usually drills that help the swimmer with technique. Drills mostly focus on one part of the stroke like kicking or pulling. Certain drills are usually harder than the full stroke because they have you swim with only kicking or pulling. The next part of the workout is usually long distance or sprints. Sprints are usually between 25 and 200 yards. The last part of the practice is the cool down. The cool down is a slow paced stroke that helps your body recover after 2 hours of swimming.

Overall, swimming is one of the best ways to stay in shape during the summer, because you exercise most of your body and you won’t be bored all summer long.

Bet you can’t guess who this month’s person is. Well I will give you some hints. She has light brown hair and bluish green eyes. She was born on August 18th, 1992. Her favorite color is blue. She likes the band “The Game”. Her favorite sport is softball. Her favorite movie is The Little Rascals. She loves to shop at Wet Seal. She has a dog named Chico. Her favorite television show is Laguna Beach. Her favorite songs are Zippidy-doo-da and We Belong Together. Her favorite number is three. Okay that is all the clues that I can give you. Now it is your turn to try and figure it out. Can you guess who it is?

Ask Ellie

Dear Ellie,

My parents are getting a divorce, and it’s really stressing me out.  I can’t concentrate in school, I can’t sleep and my friends keep saying I space out. I don’t know what to do to continue on with my life and not let it get in the way.

            Sincerely,

                Troubled

Dear Troubled,

Try talking to both of your parents and let them know how you feel.  Maybe you could work out away to stay with a friend or relative for a few weeks to get your mind off things.  You should get away and try to forget about it for a while, but don’t forget about it altogether it is a problem you need to deal with.  Try to get a good night’s sleep and at school have fun with your friends and relax.

            Sincerely,

               Ellie
