Everyone at Quincy High knows about hoopla, and if not now’s the time to
find out.
Hoopla is just like Homecoming, but instead of all the girls
dressing up in glamorous gowns it’s the boys’ time to shine. The Hoopla
tradition was started by girls’ basketball coach Mr. Bob Hiss. He thought
that it would be nice to have a winter homecoming for the men. Instead of
the princess and queen there will be a prince and a king.
Classes get to choose one of their male members as well as vote for
a member of the senior class for “King”; all other classes’ candidates are
called princes. Once the initial voting takes place, there are four king
candidates, one from every class, as well as three princes. The nominees for
king were Jesse Read, his escort was Maria Boland, Scott Barnes, his escort
was Jessica Lusk, and Max Egloff, his escort was Rani Quiring. The nominees
for Prince were Tra Ross, his escort was Jessica Bennett, Kyle Hemsley, his
escort was Heather Kelley, and Jared West, his escort was Erika Samuel. The
nominees for page were Matt Rouse with his escort Courtney Jackson, and
Oliver McCallum with his Chelsey Leiss. The winner for King was Jesse Read,
Kyle Hemsley won prince, and Matt Rouse won page.
Matt Rouse said the best thing about his escort is that she is good
at sports and a good swimmer. If Kyle Hemsley could be anyone in the school
for a day he would be Grant Hedrick because “He’s the man.” If Jesse went
on American Idol he would sing “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera then he
would end up punching Simon Cowell.
For this year’s Hoopla Spirit Week Monday was pajama day, Tuesday
was opposite gender day, Wednesday was crazy hat day, Thursday was color
day, and Friday was red and white day. For color day the senior’s color was
pink, junior’s was orange, sophomore's was yellow, freshman’s was green and
8th grade was blue. The basketball was interesting but Portola ended up
beating both Varsity and J.V. teams. It’s alright we will get them next
time. |
