Got Issues?

Voice your Opinion

Key: Dark= yes and light= no

By Kinderlin Mannies

Do you ever feel that the whole world is on your shoulders? Is school so overwhelming that you feel lost and trapped between the bells? Do you have communication problems with your friends or family? Even though you may feel completely consumed by all that is going on in the world around you, there is a way out… there is help.
Quincy High School has a very unique club that most are unaware of- it’s a peer-counseling group, which is a student-run program. It has been at Quincy High since 2000, and has helped many students overcome problems in their lives. There are fifteen peer counselors in the group this year.
In order to join, these students had to fill out an application, write an essay, and get letters of recommendation from their teachers. This was all given to the advisor, Mr. Thomas.
This year the peer counselors already participated in a workshop and special training to develop skills to help others create a path for problem solving. They learned a counseling process that actually shows the people how to deal with their own problems and to find their own answers instead of being told how to fix it.

In the past, this group of individuals have counseled peers, participated in seventh grade orientation, and conducted the seventh grade buddy program. They also have taught games to the Jr. High PE class and participated in CAL State Peer Counseling Convention.
“This year’s group started late because it has been difficult to get students to come to meetings at 7:30 am, but we’ve adjusted that time since,” said Mr. Thomas. This

solve social problems, it has made a difference at QHS.”
So, if you just need a friend or someone to talk to about your own problems, these students are trained and waiting to assist you with your issues. This program helps students deal with their social problems and to find their own ways of self-discovery. If you are seeking help, talk to Mr. Thomas and the team of counselors and let them help you help yourself.
