Spring is Here

Easter Egg Candies

1 pound confectioners (powdered) sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1 tablespoon butter; softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 pinch cream of tartar
1 1/3 cup flaked coconut
8 ounces semisweet chocolate

Mix together the sugar, water, corn syrup, butter, and vanilla.  Next, add the salt, almond extract, and tartar.  Finally, combine the flaked coconut with the rest.  The mixture should be crumbly.  Shape the mixture into whatever size eggs you want and set aside.  Melt the chocolate on low heat.  When it is completely melted, wait until it has cooled down a bit, but not hardened any, then coat the eggs with chocolate.

On the Good Foot with Badminton

By Natalie Feinblum

What goes 206 miles per hour and is an Olympic Sport? Ironically, this fast-paced sport is unfamiliar to many local people. This exciting sport is none other than badminton. It has been an Olympic sport since 1992. The record speed for badminton was reached when a Chinese competitor struck the birdie (or shuttle cock, as they call it in Europe) so hard that it soared at 206 miles per hour.
According to QHS physical education teacher Mrs. Coombs, badminton can be traced to 5th century China, but its modern form originated in India as a game called Poona. Coombs continues, “Poona was a competitive sport that British officers learned and brought back to England during the 1800’s.”  Mrs. Coombs teaches it to QHS students of all ages in her P.E. classes. Mostly they play on doubles teams, which is her favorite way to play. “It’s always more fun to play with more people,” she says.

This sport is known for its agility. It consists of two players on each team, one birdie (shuttlecock), racquets, a net, and of course a board of officials. Here are some rules one has to go by in order to play this extreme sport correctly. 1) The bottom of the net must be three feet off the ground. 2) When serving the birdie, the server must serve diagonally. 3) The serve must be outside of the line, which is a foot out from of the net. 4) Of course there are out-of-bound lines. 5) The server and his partner must switch sides until the other team gets the birdie. After their turn it’s the partner’s turn to serve.
So if you want to do a sport that requires skill and patience then this sport might be for you.  This sport is not just for the older generation, but also for all ages. So what are you waiting for? Go out and try this sport!

The First Day of Spring was March 20, 2006!

Dear FIX IT,
My friends have more money than I do and they are able to buy nice quality things.  Sometimes they brag about what they have and what they are going to buy and I just sit back and listen. When they ask me what I’m going to buy , I just lie and then later feel ashamed. What should I do?
Please Help,
ASHAMED

 Fix It

Dear ASHAMED,
I know it’s tough to hear your friends talk about how rich they are, but just remember what you have and what’s important to you. Expensive things aren’t always what they seem. If it bothers you that much then you should talk to your friends and if they keep on bragging then maybe you should find new friends. People who brag about what they have, when they know that their friends don’t have as much are usually not true friends. Physical things aren’t that valued in comparison with love and integrity.

Sincerely,
FIX IT

Fix it, would like to hear from you. If you have any questions just submit to the box in the office or Mrs. Redkey's box.
