QHS Wrestler to State Championships

By Jason Wright
On March 1st The Trojan Times had the privilege of interviewing Josh Nolan, one of the most talented athletes in Quincy High School. When he is on the mat, he can do things that most people cannot.
For those of you who do not know Josh, he is on the wrestling team and has had a tremendously successful season so far.  Josh has been wrestling for seven years and now is a top contender every year.  When asked about certain influences that got him interested in wrestling, he specifically mentioned his dad.
Josh also mentioned that the aspect of wrestling that most intrigues him is the fact that it takes all you’ve got to do your best.
The greatest challenges Josh faces as a wrestler are the hard practices and long season, which physically wears on the body.  “ I try to be in great shape, and more mentally focused than my opponents,” Josh said, regarding the strengths he possesses mentally and physically.
During this season Josh had some amazing matches, but the one that specifically stands out in his mind was a match he had with a student from Modoc. Of this match Josh says, “our styles made our matches very close, which in turn made them all the more exciting.”
In order to solidify a spot in the Masters tournament Josh needed to take 4th place or better at Sub-Sections. On February 17th Josh qualified and participated in the North State Masters Tournament and took 2nd place which made him eligible to go to the state championships in Centennial Gardens, Bakersfield on March 4th.  During the Maters tournament Josh felt that his performance was good, saying, “ some of my matches were a lot closer than they should have been, but in the finals I wrestled well and won 10-5.”
Josh gave some suggestions for those who might want to get into the sport. “You are not going to come in to wrestling and dominate immediately; it takes a lot of hard work and determination.”
Obviously Josh’s hard work and determination have served him well, as he is an upstanding competitor in all wrestling tournaments he chooses to attend. Josh has learned a lot from his time as a wrestler, and he hopes to continue to improve his skills.

Wrestling Tips:

  • Fight to the very end, never quit, especially if your opponent is stalling.
  • Practicing even once a week off-season puts you way ahead of those who only practice during the season.
  • Wrestling has many styles, each emphasizing different techniques to accomplish the same objective. The more styles you learn, the more sophisticated and "rounded" your attack will be.
  • The best time to move again is right after a successful move.
  • Always keep your elbows close to your body.
  • Practice with your eyes closed to learn how to "feel" weight shifts.
  • Never stop wrestling until the whistle blows. This includes not giving up a defensive move until the referee calls the points.
