Interested in becoming a school leader and expanding your high
school experiences? QHS will soon be holding ASB and class officer
elections. So what is ASB all about.
The student government at Quincy Junior Senior High School is made
up of a governing body called the Student Congress, and all student body
officers are collectively known as the student council. Class and club
officers are voting members of student congress and attend all meetings
unless in the case of an excused absence.
In order for student congress to conduct official business, a
quorum must be present. A quorum consists of 51% of the voting members of
Student Congress. The voting members are: all students body officers, all
class and club officers, and all fifth period representatives.
To run for any Student Body office one must follow these
guidelines:
·
Achieve at least a 2.5 GPA at
the third quarter.
·
No “F” grades from the third
quarter.
·
Enrolled at Quincy High at the
time of the term of office.
·
No Student Body Officer may
hold another body, class or club office during his/her term of office.
There are five different ASB
positions: the President, Vice President, Secretary, treasurer, and the
Student Body Representatives. Duties of the President include, but are not
limited to: presiding overall ASB meetings, and organizing and directing
activities of the Student Body.
As Vice President one’s duties would include planning and presiding
over all pep assemblies, and presiding over all pep assemblies. Also the VP
is responsible for taking over, if the president is absent.
One duty of the secretary is keeping attendance figures of all
meetings. He/she also keeps a file of all Student Congress minutes, voting
records, and attendance figurers for the President, and Vice President, and
the Student Body.
If you are interested in being a Treasurer, here are some of the
duties you will be responsible for: keeping the Student Body financial books
accurate and updated, always recording all of purchase orders, and for
issuing checks and paying Student Body bills.
Don’t forget grades are very important. If you receive an “F” or
fall below a 2.5 GPA at any quarter following the election, you will loose
your office position.
All classes elect four officers: President, VP, Secretary and
Treasurer. The nomination of the class officer is held the Monday
immediately following the ASB election and the election results are
submitted to the Student Congress Advisor the following Friday. To be
eligible to run for or hold a class office position, a student must meet the
same requirements as those running for a Student Body Office. Duties of
class offices are similar to those of the ASB Officers, but they apply only
to the specific class. Class officers are also responsible for organizing
class homecoming activities and other events during the school year,
including dances and fundraisers.
Being an ASB officer can be hard, but it can also be rewarding. To
rephrase what John F. Kennedy said, ask not what your school can do for you
but what you can do for your school!

more questions or are interested in more information, see Mr. Price; he’s
the man with all the answers!
