Bits O' News

Mrs. Hutchins

By Ashley Irving

Have you ever wondered about our new teacher Mrs. Hutchins? Well she has been teaching for 6 ½ years. She has taught 7th through 12th grade. She has been substituting for Quincy high for a couple of year, but about 4 months ago she was hired to become a full time teacher in the place of Mr. Cullingford. She used to substitute, but she prefers to teach because she gets to build rapport with her students. Seeing a student understand a lesson is her favorite part of teaching. 8th grade is Ms. Hutchins favorite group because; she says that, 8th graders have more excitement.
When a student misbehaves Ms. Hutchins believes that a time out is usually a good form of punishment. Biology, First Aid, Life Science, Earth Science, Disaster Preparedness, Drivers Ed, Spanish and more are all of the varieties of subjects she has taught. “I enjoy teaching life science the most,” says Ms. Hutchins. “You can bring the natural world into the classroom.” That is why she likes life science the most. She hopes to continue to teach at Quincy High School in the years to come.

8th Grade reflections on Myspace

By Anna Plankey

For this issue of the newspaper the 8th grade class was surveyed on their thoughts about Myspace.  For those of you who don’t know what Myspace is, it is a website where users create a profile and can interact with friends like just like an e-mail address. When the 8th grade students were asked if they have a Myspace account, 20 out of 38 students said that they did. The students were also asked how many hours a day they spend on Myspace the responses varied from 5 minutes to 3 hours, but averaged to about an hour and a half a day. When they were asked if their parents agreed with them having a Myspace the majority said no or their parents didn’t care.
Recently there have been rumors that the police in our community have been checking Myspace to investigate illegal activities. The 8th grade class was asked what they thought about this issue. All students said that they thought it was an invasion of privacy. The 8th grade students were also asked what they thought about meeting someone online and having a relationship with that person, and all but one thought it was a bad idea because Internet relationships are undependable and can be dangerous.
So according to this survey, the 8th grade students like a Myspace, but disagree with certain problems that occur from the Internet and Myspace.

* Ask Ellie *

Dear Ellie,

I think I am strong, but all of the other guys say I am weak. I want to try out for football but I don’t know if I should because I don’t want all of the guys to tease and make fun of me again. What do you think I should do?

From, Hopeful

Dear Hopeful,

If you want to try out for football, go ahead and do it. Don’t pay attention to the other guys about you being weak. And if they keep making fun of you, just ignore them and, most important, have fun! And who knows, at the end of the football season, the other guys could think they are weak compared to you.

From, Ellie

Dear Ellie,

My friends are talking about me and making up rumors because I am friends with a boy and hang out with him a lot, it's not like that.  What should I do?

From, Single

Dear Single,

Maybe you should just try to talk to your friends and tell them there is nothing is going on between this boy and you.  And if they still say things about you then you should try to ignore the rumors and believe what is true in your mind.

From, Ellie

Dear Ellie,

This guy I like tells me on the phone he likes me, but when I talk him at school he ignores me.  And when he talks to other girls he says the same thing to them and treats me like a stranger.  What should I do with this?

From, Baffled

Dear Baffled,

I think you should try talking to the guy face to face.  Don’t talk to him on the computer or the phone.  And if he doesn’t talk back to you he is obviously not mature enough to be in a relationship.

From, Ellie

Did Ya’ Ever Wonder

By Natalie Ray

Have you ever wondered where the whacky sport of softball originated? Well since it is that time of year I thought I would do a little research.
It all started on a rainy Thanksgiving Day, 1887 when a group of Yale-Harvard students were waiting for the outcome of a football game in Farragut’s Boat club.  When the news came that Yale won, a Harvard student picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at a Yale student who hit it with a pole.  This gave the students the idea to chalk out a diamond on the floor and use a string ball to play baseball inside.    Hancock, the owner of the boat club named the sport indoor-baseball.
The sport quickly spread through the country and became a favorite pastime.  A fire captain in Minneapolis needed something new to keep his crew in shape and adopted the game.  In honor of his crew, The Kittens, the sport developed a new name, Kitten League Ball.
The sport eventually ended up with the name softball and was introduced to the Olympics in the late-1800.   Later the sport rose to a higher level, ASA or Amateur Softball Association. That league is still played today.
Hopefully this information encourages you to come try out the sport.
