Stepping Up
By Cory Franklin
Coach- someone in charge of training an
athlete or team. Yes, that’s the official definition. But is that really all
that defines QHS’s new varsity baseball coach Randy Kelsch? The answer is
no; as a matter of fact, that doesn’t even come close. Encouraging,
admirable, efficient, and easy-going would characterize him a lot better
than just a coach or teacher.
Mr. Kelsch expects “hard work, having fun, and never giving up”
from his players on the baseball diamond. As a coach, Mr. Kelsch wants to
set good examples. He wants his players to play with class. Mr. Kelsch also
wants his players to have integrity and take responsibility for themselves
and only themselves.
The word respect can have a lot of meanings. When asked what
respect means to him, Mr. Kelsch responded, “ Treating everyone in the best
possible way.” According to one of the JV baseball players ,“It’s almost
impossible to not show respect to such an amiable person as coach Kelsch.”
Although Mr. Kelsch didn’t play any high school or collegiate
baseball, he has “loved the game since he was very little,” and has been
coaching baseball or softball for 11 years.
Mr. Kelsch doesn’t believe in winning at all costs. But then again,
who likes losing? Mr. Kelsch thinks that the competition this year will be
“tough.” But he says his team “will do very well.”
Three words: spirit, encouragement, and moral, define what Mr.
Kelsch wants to bring to his team. So if you want to see the results of all
of this coach’s hard work, come support some Quincy baseball!
With that said, let it be known that Randy Kelsch is an excellent
coach as well as an exceptional teacher. Not only does Mr. Kelsch get things
done on the field, he also gets it done in the classroom. Not in the way of
just sticking to the curriculum and doing things by the book; but by having
fun and making sure that his students have fun too. He brings a lot more
than just another auto shop teacher. He brings friendship and a get-
things-done attitude to the classroom. |
